It’s Wednesday, December 23rd, 2020…but before we begin, a recent email from Balls Cotton brought to mind a Christmas story of a rather different variety.  And therein hangs our tale:

A long time ago, at a Naval Air Station far, far away…

…there existed the…

…known around the world today as Top Gun.  One December, in keeping with the best traditions of Naval Aviation at the time, the men of Top Gun hit upon the ideal format for commemorating their particular spirit of the Season, selecting a card which read:

But like a box of chocolates, the surprise was inside:

Needless to say not everyone up the chain of command…most especially a certain influential admiral’s wife…appreciated what every red-blooded Naval Aviator and NFO found hilariously funny.

So endeth this Christmas story.  And while no one’s career was permanently impacted by the ensuing brouhaha, Heaven help anyone foolish enough to attempt such humor in our current climate poisoned by political-correctness.

Now, here’s The Gouge!

We lead off the mid-week edition with two items well worth that most precious commodity: your time.  First, in yet another absolutely must-read offering at NRO, the great Victor Davis Hanson asks and answers…

Where Did the New Mad Left Come From?

Utopianism is age-old, as are its tragic consequences — and we haven’t seen the worst yet.

Sen. Rick Scott Explains His ‘No’ Vote on COVID Relief

Meanwhile, as Jim Freeman suggests at Best of the Web:

“…despite his own vaccination experience, Mr. Biden is still talking as if there’s a huge problem he will be called upon to solve. According to a Bloomberg report on Washington’s latest massive goring of taxpayers, Mr. Biden seems to think there’s much more Covid spending to come:

Biden on Sunday said he applauds Congress’s bipartisan agreement, but he described the package as providing “temporary relief.”

“This action in the lame duck session is just the beginning. Our work is far from over,” Biden said in a statement including other actions his administration plans to take. (You know, ‘cuz

Immediately, starting in the new year, Congress will need to get to work on support for our COVID-19 plan, for support to struggling families, and investments in jobs and economic recovery.”

The economy is awash in money; politicians just need to let people use it. Americans suffering economically are suffering from shutdowns, which never worked as intended, inflicted enormous collateral damage and are now becoming untenable with the arrival of vaccines. Washington’s work is over.

And for those interested, writing at NRO, John Fund presents an excellent analysis of why Trump’s election lawsuits failed, concluding:

“…Abuses, incompetence, and, yes, alleged fraud made the 2020 election suspect. Too bad Trump exaggerated his claims, failed to address some of the election’s ticking time bombs in court before the election, and took on lawyers unsuited to the task. Those errors, plus the fact that the media and courts often didn’t do their jobs, doomed his effort.

Since Fund raised the subject of a media not doing its job, courtesy of The Hill via James Nichols, Joe Concha details how, in keeping with its non-coverage of the Biden family corruption scandal…

For The NY Times, no news is fit to print about Rep. Swalwell and a spy

If you’re a New York Times subscriber who also watches the broadcast network evening news and considers that your news diet, there’s a very good chance you haven’t heard about Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.) and his ties to an accused Chinese spy a few years ago.

To review why this is absolutely worthy of coverage, Swalwell’s interaction with the alleged spy known as Fang Fang included, according to Axios, Fang placing an intern in Swalwell’s office and helping to fundraise for his 2014 reelection campaign. In 2015, the FBI provided Swalwell a “defensive briefing” to warn him of the threat she appeared to pose.

So, the first obvious question is this: Given how easily Swalwell was duped, why did House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) shortly thereafter place him on the House Intelligence Committee, which oversees the CIA and therefore has access to the highest level of sensitive, classified information?

The New York Times doesn’t seem to care about getting an answer to that question.

Of the biases we see in major media, the sin of omission is one that seems to occur only when the protagonist of a major story has a (D) next to his or her name. So, when the New York Times, which has a whopping 7 million subscribers and is considered the country’s most influential publication, doesn’t see the Swalwell story as a story at all, it tells you just as much about its moral compass as it does its editorial decisions…”

Which ain’t much in either instance.

Next, some disappointing but unsurprising news, as the WSJ relates…

Barr Won’t Appoint Special Counsel to Probe Hunter Biden, Vote Fraud

Attorney general says he believes the investigation into President-elect Joe Biden’s son is ‘being handled responsibly and professionally

Seriously?!?  Even were any probes into the Biden family’s corruption “being handled responsibly and professionally” today, Barr certainly understands said handling would continue only until January 20th, when any further investigations…be they responsible, professional or of the Russia-collusion style…will be quietly and permanently terminated, and Hunter will walk.

Then again, assuming he’s not somehow setting up the appointment of a special counsel by his short-term successor, Barr’s decision is in keeping with the treatment afforded every other Biden, as this item from the New York Post details:

Joe Biden’s niece Caroline gets no jail time after DUI guilty plea

“…The walk-free plea continues a long Biden family tradition of avoiding jail time. A Post investigation in July found at least eight other busts of Bidens resulted in wrist slaps…”

For those interested, the Post also offers this timeline of Hunter’s China contacts.

Turning now to our continuing coverage of what we believe has become the Wuhan virus “casedemic”, courtesy of Stilton’s Place, the incomparable Mr. Jarlsberg highlights the…

No Escape Clause

A Christmas crisis has been averted thanks to Dr. Anthony Fauci, who bravely flew all the way to the North Pole to personally vaccinate Santa Claus after having the jolly old elf sign a few liability forms waiving legal recourse if things went sideways.

Fauci disclosed this exciting adventure during a special CNN/Sesame Street town hall broadcast meant to reassure the nation’s children that Santa would not be a superspreader on Christmas Eve, sliding down chimneys and coughing on everything while dropping off presents which might as well be labeled “you’ll be dead by New Year’s.”

CNN clearly picked the right man for the broadcast, as Dr. Fauci has a lot of experience spinning fantastic tales and trying to pass them off as true. Who can forget his whimsical assertion that surgical masks are dangerous for the general public? Or that China was “transparent” and a big, big help in fighting Covid-19?

Other wink-wink-nudge-nudge storytime favorites from the Fauci canon include his assertion that Hydroxychloroquine is ineffective in the early-stage treatment of the virus, and is super-duper dangerous besides. And that SARS-CoV-2 just popped up naturally and didn’t come from Satan’s workshop in Wuhan, China. Or his imaginative fable that the hastily approved (and wildly profitable) drug Remdesivir does any damn thing at all!

As always, Fauci’s fables are designed to make himself the hero of the story. Of course, if he just told kids that “Santa doesn’t get sick like people do,” he wouldn’t have been able to talk about his trip to the North Pole…and the magic horse he rode in on.

We share Stilton’s low opinion of Dr. Faux Chi, a self-serving charlatan for whom we hold nothing but…

Speaking of self-serving government officials we’d suggest perform an unnatural act on themselves…and the horse they rode in on…as you’ve likely learned, the New York Post also recently informed us…

Dr. Birx went to Delaware with family on Thanksgiving despite her travel warnings

Dr. Deborah Birx traveled with family out of state over Thanksgiving weekend — disregarding her own advice to stay home and not gather during the holidays, according to a report.

The White House coronavirus response coordinator was joined by three different generations of family at one of her vacation properties on Fenwick Island in Delaware on Nov. 27, just one day after the Thanksgiving holiday, the Associated Press reported. The group — which included her husband Paige Reffe, a daughter, son-in-law and two young grandchildren — were from two separate households.

Birx — who has a home in Washington D.C. and another in Potomac, Maryland — defended the trip saying that she needed to take care of winterizing the property before a potential sale. “I did not go to Delaware for the purpose of celebrating Thanksgiving,” Birx said in a statement. She argued the members of the trip belong to her “immediate household,” though acknowledged that they live in separate homes.

Birx had urged people in the days leading up to Thanksgiving to keep gatherings to “your immediate household.” I don’t like it to be any number,” Birx said on CNN’s “New Day.” “Because you know, if you say it can be ten, and it’s eight people from four different families, then that probably is not the same degree of safe as ten people from your immediate household.”

Birx said that at the time that every American is obligated to make sacrifices to stop the spread of the virus…”

You get the picture:

Just not by those in positions of power and influence…like Dr. Birx…or Dr. Faux Chithe Speaker of the House…the governors of California, Michigan and Illinois…the mayors of Philadelphia, San Francisco, Chicago and Austin…not to mention the mentally-handicapped, including a future President andcurrent cable television personality…just to name a few!

As Jim Geraghty noted at his Morning Jolt

If you will be traveling to see loved ones this week for Christmas, and anyone suspiciously asks what you’re doing or where you’re going, just answer, “I’m going to winterize one of my properties before I sell it. My family will be joining me for a meal while I’m there, and we will be there for 50 hours or so.”

Subsequent to this story breaking, NRO has confirmed Birx will be stepping down, “citing the criticism she received over the weekend for traveling to visit her relatives over the holidays, violating her own coronavirus guidelines.” Just so you understand, she’s NOT resigning because of what she did, only because the violation of her own guidelines was criticized!

So here’s the inevitable question inquiring minds are asking: if the threat posed by the Wuhan virus is as serious as Birx and the other hypocrites mentioned above would have us believe, would they really risk their own lives and the lives of their families by ignoring restrictions they’ve mandated for others?!?  We for one think not.

Which brings us to The Lighter Side:

Then there’s these from Balls Cotton…

…along with one from Ed Hickey…

…and two more from Brendan Clark:

Were Governor Blackface truly committed to taking important steps forward for the Commonwealth and the country, he’d resign from office.

Whatever color flight suits this Hawkeye’s aircrew were wearing prior to this pass, they were all brown when it was over. Witness why carrier aviators always cob the power as soon as their wheels touch the deck.
