It’s Friday, February 1st, 2019…one day before Punxsutawney Phil reckons whether we’ll endure six more weeks of this wicked winter…

…courtesy of anthropogenic global warming.

Yeah,…whatever!

Now, here’s The Gouge!

First up, writing at the WSJ, Kim Strassel details the difference between…

Grande vs. Keurig Billionaires

Schultz’s independent run makes more sense than Bloomberg’s Democratic one.

“Billionaire Michael Bloomberg lectured billionaire Howard Schultz Monday on the proper way to run for president. Third-party campaigns are a nice thought, explained Mr. Bloomberg, but the Starbucks baron is indulging in too grande-venti-trenta of an ambition: “There is no way an independent can win.”

The New York mogul wasn’t alone in his condemnation. The entire Democratic and media establishment went into meltdown mode, castigating Mr. Schultz as out of touch and a menace to those candidates who might deliver the country from Donald J. Trump. Yet the criticism was particularly rich coming from Mr. Bloomberg, whose own path to the White House is as tiny as a Keurig pod.

…For all his close study of independent runs, the joke is that Mr. Bloomberg has still missed the mark. He’d arguably get a better hearing among Republican voters in a GOP challenge to Mr. Trump than he will from the ascendant progressives he’s thrown in with.

Mr. Schultz cheerfully noted Thursday that Democratic fury at his announcement is proof that he “must being doing something right.” Good for him. He’s at least pursuing a route to the White House that has some chance for success. Which puts him several grandes and ventis ahead of that other billionaire.

Though, Bloomberg’s obvious shortcomings notwithstanding, Schultz is still one can short of a six-pack!

Next up, as NRO‘s Jack Crowe informs us, the…

Chicago Police Are STILL Unable to Find Footage of Alleged Racist Attack on Empire Actor

“…Jessie Smollett said he was assaulted and suffered a cracked rib but condo surveillance video shows Smollett walking past security to the elevator. Without telling them he had just been attacked by thugs who “beat the hell out of him” and “broke his ribs.”

The next time Smollett is seen on surveillance camera, he is entering a condo building. Police say he now has a rope around his neck and is “wearing it like a neck tie“. About a minute (maybe less) has passed since he was seen on video.

And Jessie Smollett says he was talking to his manager during the assault, but he won’t turn over his phone…”

Which hasn’t prevented the biggest bovines in the lowing herd from weighing in before the facts are known:

“…At some point the police were contacted and Smollett was interviewed in a friend’s apartment at 2:42 a.m. He asked police to turn off their body cameras so the encounter would not be recorded. At this point, he was still wearing the rope around his neck, police said.

So let’s recap what Smollett says happened, together with what Chicago reporters have heard from police. Two men recognized a gay black actor from a TV show at 2 a.m. on a Chicago street during an extreme cold snap while he was on his phone. Instead of taking the phone from him, they began to shout slurs at him. The assailants happened to have a rope and an unknown liquid with them. They put a rope around his neck, but instead of strangling him with it, they just left it there and then ran away. Instead of calling the police immediately on the phone, Smollett walked into an apartment building and past security, without informing anyone about the alleged assault, and he kept the rope around his neck for some three-quarters of an hour. He neglected to tell the police about the MAGA remark in this first interview, revealing it only later in a subsequent interview. He took himself to Northwestern Memorial Hospital that morning and was released later in the morning. TMZ posted a picture of Smollett with a small scratch or cut beneath his right eye.

That’s pretty much all we know. Here’s hoping we find out more.

Smith’s account also includes this sage suggestion from a local FOX reporter:

On Tuesday, in response to a Joe Biden tweet expressing outrage over the alleged hate-crime assault on Smollett, longtime Chicago TV reporter Rafer Weigel of Fox 32 wrote: “Might be best to tone down the outrage on the Jussie Smollett story until more evidence comes in to suggest it actually happened.” Later the reporter added: “To be clear. I am not accusing Smollett of lying. I’m saying the Chicago PD and Chicago FBI have been working round the clock & have found nothing to support it. And given the extremity of his claims and where they allegedly took place it has them skeptical.”

Color us not simply “skeptical”, but decidedly doubtful!

Turning from the decidedly doubtful to the indescribably despicable, writing at his Morning Jolt, Jim Geraghty relates…

The Democrats’ Brutal Honesty and Honest Brutality About Abortion

“…Clarity helps prevent a “twisting of remarks.” Declaring that a child “has the rights” “when you bring your baby home” is precisely the sort of thing that would lead people to believe that a U.S. senator believes that human beings aren’t guaranteed a constitutional right to life until some period of time after birth. Northam’s comments indicate that he finds it morally acceptable to not resuscitate a newborn baby if that death is the outcome that “the family desired.” They don’t merely want to defend partial-birth abortion; they’re willing to defend post-birth abortion.

If you’re pro-life, the comments of Governor Northam can be horrifying and depressing, but also invigorating. Since the mid-1990s, the Democratic party has concluded that procedure worth being “safe and legal” has no reason to be rare.

It easy to forget that abortion advocates are losing this debate; the abortion rate reached a historic low in 2015, the most recent year for which data is available, and the decline in abortions was seen in women across all age groups. The number of abortion providers continues to decline.

And even some Democrats are having second thoughts:

Del. Dawn Adams, D-Richmond, said she “did not exercise due diligence” before co-sponsoring the abortion legislation with Del. Kathy Tran, D-Fairfax. Tran became the focus of a social media firestorm this week after Republicans circulated video of her saying the bill would allow abortions up until the moment of birth if one doctor certified that the mother’s physical or mental health was at risk.

“I made a mistake, and all I know to do is to admit it, tell the truth, and let the chips fall where they may,” said Adams, a first-term delegate who won a close upset victory in 2017 in her suburban district and could face a competitive re-election campaign this year.

In testimony, Tran said that the law would permit a woman to have an abortion performed while she was in labor. “This remains a crime and would not be something any sane licensed physician would perform,” Adams said. “The code is very specific and clear about what this means and it is different from an abortion, even late term.”

Kathy Tran’s protestations to the contrary notwithstanding.

If you’re curious, Tran’s assault on the most vulnerable among us wasn’t Progressives’ first assault on the rights of the living, as this 1999 video of Barbara Boxer confirms:

Note the simple, straight-forward question Boxer refuses to answer.

Now, 20 years later, straight from the horse’s mouth, Virginia’s “moderate” governor confirms Dimocrats have no problem killing babies who have been born!

Meanwhile, the Red Queen continues to express her ignorance of the reality her political party…

…has determined the viable unborn be delivered sans life:

Then there’s this ignominious anniversary noted by the WSJ:

This Day in Liberal Judicial Activism—January 31

2006Upon the Senate’s confirmation of Samuel Alito’s Supreme Court nomination, Justice O’Connor’s July 2005 decision to retire takes effect. Plucked by President Reagan from the obscurity of an Arizona intermediate appellate court in 1981, O’Connor failed to live up to her early promise. Averse to any judicial principle that would limit her discretion in future cases, O’Connor was notorious for her inconsistency. Worse, in her last 15 years on the Court, she cast her vote for liberal judicial activist results in many major cases. Her jurisprudential legacy consists primarily of the infinitely malleable and subjective standards that she concocted, such as her “endorsement” standard for review of Establishment Clause claims (a standard endorsed by no other justice) and her “undue burden” standard for abortion regulations.

Two thoughts come to mind: (1) O’Connor is yet another example of Republican Presidents’ penchant for appointing Progressives in Conservative clothing.

(2) If there are levels in Hell, her support of the unrestricted slaughter of the unborn certainly ensures O’Connor a seat nearest the heat.

Which brings us to The Lighter Side:

Then there’s this classic representation of the relative levels of comfort enjoyed by the various branches of our Military, courtesy of Balls Cotton:

“God bless the U.S. Air Force” is right…’cuz no other branch of the Service will!

Finally, we’ll call it a week with yet another sordid story straight from the pages of The Crime Blotter, courtesy today of a guy who obviously enjoys his work:

Minnesota man arrested after wife reportedly found dead in home

“…When responding officers arrived at the home, Johnson was allegedly standing there naked, KEYC reported, citing a criminal complaint. The man then reportedly “ran upstairs and began bathing in a soap and bleach mixture.”

Johnson reportedly had been using amphetamines in the days leading to his arrest at the home, where officers reportedly found 47 guns.

Johnson’s wife had several health problems and wasn’t being properly taken care of, according to reports. The criminal complaint reportedly claims Johnson was feeding his wife snow before her death to keep her hydrated…”

Sure, Minnesota winters can be tiresome and trying…

…but given his mug shot, the bleach bath and his lack of clothing, we’re relatively certain Duane Johnson (no relation to the Rock Ridge Johnsons) ain’t playin’ with a full deck!

You betcha!

P.S.  We’ll be heading down to Mexico Saturday morning on a missions trip helping our hermanas and hermanos in Puebla complete the construction of their church.  So, until Monday or Wednesday, February 11th or 13th…
