It’s Wednesday, the Ides of March, 2017…and here’s The Gouge!
Picking up on our earlier theme regarding the numerous fronts on which Progressives’ wage war against the Founders’ Republic and Constitution upon which it stands, we offer this follow-up on modern Liberalism’s utter disregard for the rule of law as evidenced by its continued assault upon the First Amendment, courtesy of the WSJ:
“Amid the icy Nor’easter that hit the east coast Tuesday, a clear ray of intellectual sunshine emerged: Professors Robert George of Princeton University and Cornel West of Harvard University posted online, for national signatures, a petition in defense of freedom of speech. You may find it at http://jmp.princeton.edu/statement.
…For years, Professors George and West, the former a conservative and the latter a socialist, together taught a class at Princeton on how to listen to contrary points of view. Middlebury’s violence drove home what many in academia have come to see more clearly now—that the most basic tenets of free inquiry and exchange are under unprecedented pressure in the U.S., not least at universities.
The George-West statement stands as a forceful rebuttal to the all-too-frequent attempt to stigmatize opponents into silence. We hope it gains the national support it deserves.“
Problem is, like Tiger’s taste in women, talk is cheap. Particularly when, as David French observes at NRO, words are meaningless when police abandon their most basic duties…
When law enforcement can’t guarantee our liberty, law enforcement has failed.
“I’m supposed to be encouraged, but I’m not.
In the aftermath of this month’s violent attack on Charles Murray and a Middlebury professor, I’m supposed to be encouraged, as a supporter of free speech and academic freedom in higher education, that pundits, professors, and writers from across the political spectrum have united to condemn mob censorship. I’m supposed to be encouraged that even stalwart men of the left such as New York Times columnists Frank Bruni and Nicholas Kristof are waking up to the modern American academy’s serious intellectual-diversity problem. And I’m supposed to be encouraged that Middlebury’s president and dozens of Middlebury professors have united to express their support for free speech.
But I’m not.
I’m certainly grateful for the near-unanimous condemnation of the protesters and rioters at Middlebury (and also at Berkeley, where the so-called “black bloc” shut down Milo Yiannopoulos’s planned speech, started fires, vandalized shops, and beat Trump supporters in the streets), but I’m not encouraged, and I don’t think other free-speech advocates should be either.
Why? Because the rioters won.In two key incidents at two important colleges, violent and disruptive protesters succeeded in shutting down free speech.
In Berkeley, police literally stood back and let the riot unfold, later defending their passive approach on the grounds that actually enforcing the law could have caused greater injury.(Can you say…
…”Baltimore”?!? We KNEW you could!) As it was, they intervened on a case-by-case basis to stop individual beatings and let rioters vandalize 15 buildings. University police made one arrest. City police reported zero arrests on the night of the riots.
The Middlebury incident is more recent, and investigations are still ongoing, but protesters sent a liberal professor to the hospital after they “rocked, pounded, and jumped on” her vehicle, and dozens of students succeeded in drowning out Murray’s speech with their boos. So far, they have faced no consequences for their actions.
Let’s be clear.Unless the law is used to protect liberty, all the tut-tutting in the world won’t protect free speech.Pundits and professors don’t control the streets. If the mob is able to dictate the facts on the ground, op-eds and professor letters will be meaningless…”
Truer words, quite literally, have never been written. Problem is, in almost every case of urban or university violence across the country, Progressives control the police. And when the enemies of the Constitution and rule of law control the means of enforcing same, as well as a judiciary committed to misinterpreting said laws, it’s game over…at least without a fight.
We’ve said it before, we’ll say it again: absent law enforcement stepping in to…GASP!…enforce the law, it’s only a matter of time before some perceived pasty takes the threat these anarchists pose to their person seriously and exercises his or her right to self-defense.
Moving on, we encounter another front, that of denigrating the very symbols of America, as Katherine Timpf recounts, also courtesy of NRO:
Ignore the Asian kid on the left; for Progressive purposes, they count as White.
“Students at Valley High School in Iowa wore USA-themed gear during a basketball game — and fans of the opposing team, Des Moines North High School, are saying that was offensive.
According to local news source KCCI, Valley fans say that they’ve used a “USA” theme in the past for games against several different schools, but North’s fans are insisting that it was a personal attack against them because some of their students come from refugee families.
The controversy got so intense that a group of student leaders from Valley wound up hand-delivering a note of apology to North’s principal:
It has been brought to our attention that the decision by the Valley High School student section to wear U.S.A. apparel at our game last night was offensive to members of your community and fan base. We are deeply sorry if we have offended anyone in any way. We have traditionally dressed in such a fashion for great games such as the one last night. Everyone here at Valley has immense respect not only for your team and players but for your community as a whole. Please know that our intent was in no way to offend or demean—just to support our own team in a way we have done before.
A lot of people were very upset about it,” North sophomore DeNasja Spencer told KCCI. “Even if that was their theme for the game, I feel like they should have switched that because everyone knows North is a more diverse school.”
North’s assistant coach, Morgan Wheat, weighed in to chastise Valley’s students for even thinking of being patriotic:
“Everything just blows up after the game and I’m still hearing about it this morning,” [s]he told WHO TV. “Any normal person, any educated person can look at that and think, ’What the hell are these kids thinking?’”
Really, Wheat?Because I am actually wondering what the hell you are thinking…”
As were we; not only regarding the assistant coach’s comments (after all, [s]he’s the product of centuries of White oppression), but also regarding the abdication of leadership by the Valley student “leaders”. If, as the facts indicate, Valley students had been following an established tradition, would not a “letter of explanation” rather than an “apology” sufficed?!?
Then there’s the front epitomized by Fake News; i.e., stories which are either wholly fabricated or filled with distorted “facts”…like the following from Foreign Policy.com via Drudge:
“State Department staffers have been instructed to seek cuts in excess of 50 percent in U.S. funding for U.N. programs, signaling an unprecedented retreat by President Donald Trump’s administration from international operations that keep the peace, provide vaccines for children, monitor rogue nuclear weapons programs, and promote peace talks from Syria to Yemen, according to three sources…”
Only three; which three?!? Consider these three! (1). As regards the reporter’s claim the U.N.’s kept the peace, where: in Rwanda, where over 800,000 died in a wave of genocide the U.N. knew was coming beforehand, but refused to intercede; or in Srebrenica, where U.N. “peacekeepers” stepped aside to permit the slaughter of hundreds, possibly thousands?
(2). And what benefit comes in light of the demonstrated effectiveness of the U.N.’s “monitoring” of rogue weapons programs; the ability to cry, “Hey, Tel Aviv…
…”Heads up“?!?
(3). The U.N.’s effectiveness certainly can’t be measured by the inclusion of repressive regimes such as China, Cuba, Venezuela and Saudi Arabia on the U.N. Human Rights Council…or Iran winning an appointment to the U.N. Economic and Social Council’s Commission on the Status of Women.
After all…
Then there’s the Righteous Indignation Front, as exemplified by this hypocritical headline:
“Zac Posen may have dressed both Ivanka and Melania Trump in the past, but he has zero plans to do so again. The 36-year-old couture designer told The Daily Beast he has “no current plans to dress members of the first family.”
“Right now, I’m staying away from bringing my brand into politics,” he stated to the news site. “There are issues that are being questioned that are fundamentally upsetting to me — deeply: LGBT rights, immigration, funding for the arts, Planned Parenthood and women’s rights. These are just issues that are very close to my heart, and I use my own private voice and funds to fight them and in support of them. I think it’s important to use your voice. I think that every brand and person has a right to be vocal…”
We challenge anyone to convince us, were Ivanka and Melania to solicit his services and he declined, how Posen’s position would be any different from a Christian baker who opted out of making a cake for a homosexual wedding.
Otherwise, if Posen’s position is properly predicated, then so is the reaction…
…of this chopper pilot.
Since we’re on the subject of TTDS, courtesy of G. Trevor and The New York Post, we present Total Trump Derangement Syndrome personified:
“…feared for her safety since the day Trump was elected.
“I woke up the day after the election in fear of what would happen to someone like me. And we’ve seen what happened,” she said. “We’ve seen what happened to Indians…”
Which begs the question which Indians, the simply wiped…
…or the totally wiped out…
…like the Sioux and Cheyenne at Wounded Knee?!?
Ya GOTTA be SPECIFIC!
In a related item of inherent Liberal inferiority, in Monday’s Morning Jolt, Jim Geraghty relates how in Madonna’s latest anti-Trump screed…
The Only Thing She Got Wrong Was Everything
In a new black-and-white short film, Madonna declares we have entered a “new age of tyranny” where “all marginalized people are in danger” and “where being uniquely different might truly be considered a crime.”
Notice what stirs her to this declaration of modern tyranny. It’s not an angry mob at Middlebury College surrounding Charles Murray and assaulting a professor. It’s not the riots in Berkeley preventing Milo from speaking. It’s not a judge imposing a fine of $135,000 for refusing to bake a cake for a wedding.
It’s not civil asset forfeiture, where law-enforcement authorities can seize property from someone without charging them with a crime. (Justice Clarence Thomas is the most prominent judicial figure asking how this doesn’t violate “the Due Process Clause and our Nation’s history.”) It’s not private probation, where private collection agencies take over the role of the government in collecting fines. It’s not the vast domestic surveillance tools in the hands of the National Security Agency.
No, it’s the legal democratic election of a president and congressional majorities she doesn’t like. Notice that the president and congressional majorities can’t agree on key details of their agenda, and the courts struck down one of the new president’s first executive orders. Criticism of the new president and his legislative allies is unrestricted and fairly common. You don’t have to like any of this, but governmental checks and balances and freedom of expression is pretty much the opposite of tyranny.
Also notice Madonna’s artistic stance against this “new age of tyranny” requires her to march towards the camera in semi-Fascist chic clothing holding snarling dogs.
Except when it comes to predetermined race-based outcomes!
“New York education officials are planning to scrap a literacy test for people trying to become teachers, claiming too many non-white individuals fail it and therefore weaken diversity within the profession.
The state Board of Regents is expected to adopt the recommendation of getting rid of the test, which is designed to measure reading and writing skills, known as the Academic Literacy Skills Test, The Associated Press reports.
…The literacy test which was introduced in the 2013-2014 school year was part of an effort to raise the quality of teaching in New York and to weed out inferior students.Proponents of the reform had criticized the quality of students trying to become teachers. A 2016 study by the National Council on Teacher Quality found that 44 percent of the teacher preparation programs it looked at accepted people from the bottom half of their high school class.
The test, however, caused concern among some groups as just 46 percent of Hispanic test takers and 41 percent of black test takers managed to pass it at the first attempt as against 64 percent of white students…”
After all, when the sum of 2+2 is is somehow different than 4, who KNOWS what the meaning of “is” is!
Which brings us, appropriately enough, to The Lighter Side…
Finally, we’ll call it a wrap with yet another sordid story straight from the pages of The Crime Blotter:
“Scandinavian experts (“Experts” our ass!) are urging the use of child-like sex dolls in a bid to stop pedophiles from abusing real life children. The Sexpo Foundation in Finland wants the disgusting dummies to be made available to pedophiles following a reported boom in imports in neighboring Norway.
Norwegian cops revealed they are increasingly seizing creepy child-like sex dolls, mostly made in Hong Kong.More than 20 have been impounded by customs officials in the past six months. Child sex dolls are banned in Norway. Norway’s National Criminal Investigation Service says those who have ordered the dolls are men aged between 18 and 60. Some of the men have been convicted of sexual offenses against children in the past.
Police fear the purchasers “may pose a risk of committing abuses against children in the future.”(Ya THINK?!?)
But in an open letter to the Norwegian authorities, the Sexpo Foundation argues that the dolls should be made available. The letter by Sexpo executive director Tommi Paalanen says: “Both Sexpo services and international studies have shown that the risk of a sexual offense against a child can be reduced by providing a pedophile with a channel for their desires.” (Yeah, like a life-size, anatomically-correct Lewinski doll would have curbed Bubba’s insatiable Oval Orificial desires!) “Sex dolls are one such channel.”
“A person who uses a lot of money and effort to purchase the doll has already made the decision that he wants to carry out the sexual tendency. Therefore, it is important that the customs authorities or others concerned about the sex dolls actors do not hamper their availability.”
No, what’s important is that every single person who orders one of these dolls is locked up for life! These aren’t experts, they’re advocates; of the grossest, most heinous activity known to man…that is, outside of voting for a Dimocrat.
